Adactio: Journal—Filters

my notes ( ? )

After so many years of spam, splog, slop, phishing and above all trolling, "Our guard is up. Our filters are activated. Our default mode is suspicion", something that's only going to get worse with AI: are those photos too good to be true? Can that video actually be real? Is that a spambot, or just "someone who isn’t neurotypical or who doesn’t speak English as their first language"? Did a human write this?

Before everything was enshittified, "the only way to get to trusted information was to rely on humans ... [who] made directories... linked to something that they, a human, vouched for as being genuinely interesting." Now, maybe, we will turn full circle, with all the crap "giving us a new appreciation for human curation... Maybe it’s time for a bookmarking revival" and more use of feed readers.

But bookmarks can be spam, and while the author claims that everything in his feed reader "is made by humans", how can he be sure?

Like him, "I want a web that empowers people to connect with other people they trust, without any intermediary gatekeepers".
