We need to finish building the Fediverse

We need to finish building the Fediverse

my notes ( ? )

Michael Foster's "top ten unfinished building blocks" are:

  • trust & safety: "heart of an ethical social web... [currently] delegated to a small group of volunteers... [but] green shoots emerging"
  • spam filters: "there are some amazing tools now... Pixelfed has shown what can be done"
  • safe spaces / bridging & federation: 2 closely linked challenges which are light years away in reality from the promise Fediverse advocates regularly make
  • multiple content formats: many exist, but "we need to pull them together into a useful user experience" - and UX seems to never get the focused attention it clearly needs
  • portable ID: amen - again, more promise than reality (I found out the hard way)
  • micropayments: intriguingly, "Evan Prodromou has experimented with a premium account to capture payments. Bloggers, creators and journalists are pioneering patron supported newsletters and platforms ... Ko-Fi and other tipping options abound. Podcasting 2.0 is building Value for Value... nostr is built around Zaps and Farcaster is built on Base... [let's avoid] Blockchain wallets, tests and identity checks. ... there’s a big opportunity for Patreon"
  • onboarding organisations: things have clearly changed inside the Fediverse if this is now considered important - the antipathy I found just a couple of years back was very disheartening
  • channels/feeds: following hashtags isn't enough: "We need to build in ways for users to create, curate and moderate channels, and easily share them across the network. Users should be able to post to channels, link to them just like hashtags or mentions, and easily discover the channels which interest them."
  • governance: "Wikipedia has shown what can be done", but the Fediverse is a long way from that.
