Marketing, groupthink & blind spots

my notes ( ? )

@digitaltonto on "Cargo Cult Marketers", who - despite the complexity of modern marketing - "offer a false solution ... a simple formula that explains everything." Greg goes into the psychology of this particular breed of marketers with great insight, charting how they come up with and fall in love with their own idea and then, subconsciously, only see supporting evidence: "What’s most difficult and what really takes effort, is to take pains to disbelieve your own ideas – to try to disprove them by finding evidence to the contrary and applying unyielding, rigorous analysis." I'd only add that this phenomenon is certainly not limited to marketing (although God knows social media marketing certainly generated more than a few deluded souls), and that groupthink is a huge factor at play here. When everyone around you have fallen in love with the same idea, it's difficult to imagine anyone else could possibly feel differently. - Cargo Cult Marketers | Digital Tonto
