You're a scientist with an Atmosphere account. Now what? (briefing note & video)

As ill health prevented me from attending the Aster launch on 12th October 2026, I decided to provide attendees with something they can take back to their colleagues about how the increasing number of scientists on Bluesky can be turned into "win-wins" for scientific institutions and the scientists working within them.

Bluesky accounts are in fact Atmosphere accounts, and can be used on all Atmosphere apps, many of which are designed for scientists. As the following video explains:

  • early win-wins: your institution can build structures in Bluesky which benefit both the institution and the scientists themselves
  • future potential: these structures will become increasingly powerful as more scientists use more Atmosphere apps for content discovery, discussion, and curation.

For a little more detail, there's a 1pager (pdf), which this video explains in full.
