Bluesky’s Stackable Approach to Moderation - Bluesky

Bluesky’s Stackable Approach to Moderation - Bluesky

my notes ( ? )

Bluesky's announcement of their open-sourcing of "Ozone, our collaborative moderation tool... individuals and teams can work together to review and label content", coupled with the ability for people and communities to "run your own independent moderation services, seamlessly integrated into the Bluesky app".

This enables "an ecosystem of moderation and open-source safety tools that gives communities power to create their own spaces, with their own norms and preferences". Added to that is Bluesky's own moderation team.

The post then "dive into how moderation works on the network":

  • upon signup you're subscribed to Bluesky's own moderation service by default - "read our 2023 Moderation Report for more"
  • then you can layer on additional filters on top, supplied by 3rd parties. to customise your experience: "read our technical explainer for moderation architecture across the AT Protocol here. "
  • Moderation services are multi-user: "multiple people can manage them. Tooling designed for teams and communities"
  • Moreover, they "can also accept reports", so users contribute to the quality of their fellow-subscribers' experience
  • Ozone is open source - see the "open-source repo here - so you can submit a PR or fork it.
  • It's "built to help humans review moderation reports", but devs can use AI to apply labels via the API directly, without using Ozone
  • the emphasis on labels means devs can get creative: while the initial idea was to heop "hide, block, or blur content, it could eventually be used for curation or verification", and devs can come up with other uses
  • the approach is protocol/ecosystem-wide, not limited to Bluesky
