The Goose Is Loose: Why I’m Building Better Social Media for Canada - Gander Social Blog

my notes ( ? )

"Social media is a dumpster fire. Between the bots, the ragebait, and the platforms that profit from division... I stopped hoping someone else would fix it—and decided to build something better, right here in Canada."

A blog post introducing the Gander project:

  • its genesis - "Peter Wall started Elbows Up ... to unite Canadians in response to Trump’s threats ... and our feeds were being infested by rage-baiting parasites. ... the platforms had nothing to offer to mitigate it"
  • the goal: "build a new social platform? One that respected privacy, that didn’t algorithmically reward outrage, and maybe made it easier—not harder—to be decent to each other?... Built and hosted in Canada, Owned by Canadians, Ethical by design, Secure, modern, and fun"

Have signed up for early access, despite not being Canadian. Based on what I can see, I'll discover:

  • a "Canada filter"
  • a pretty nice-looking format switcher ("Switch between classic posts and full-screen content with a tap")
  • algorithm(s?) designed to avoid doomscrolling
  • context (?)
  • uncreepy friend recommendations
  • "built-in ... bias ratings, source credibility, and fact-check results" - something I've wanted for myhub for a while.
